Primary constraint: preservation of a nationally recognized architectural landmark under historic scrutiny.
Commissioned to restore the observation deck of the Ramada House designed by Judith Chafee, this project involved work on one of the most significant examples of modern desert architecture in Tucson. The responsibility was not to reinterpret the space, but to preserve and reinforce Chafee’s original intent while addressing decades of exposure in the Catalina foothills.
Our work focused on material authenticity and execution. Solid teak decking was repaired and refinished using traditional linseed oil treatments selected for longevity and compatibility with the original design. Every decision was made with the goal of maintaining proportion, detail, and restraint so the architecture could continue to speak for itself.
This project required a high level of precision and discipline, both in the craft itself and in how the work was carried out. Heritage restoration leaves little room for error. The completed deck restores full use of the space while preserving uninterrupted views of the surrounding desert, honoring the clarity and rigor of Chafee’s vision through careful, technically sound execution.
